Here is a comprehensive technical troubleshooting guide for the Retrotouch EnOcean Smart Kinetic Switch (868MHz) paired with NodOn In-Wall/Lighting Relay Modules.
Because this pairing uses batteryless, self-powered RF transmissions, issues are almost always related to physical actuation force, distance/obstructions, or relay memory limits.
When you triple-press the local button on the NodOn module, its LED should glow solid Red and the connected light should toggle every second. If this doesn't happen:
Incorrect Button Timing: The triple-press must be incredibly quick (3 rapid clicks within less than 2 seconds). If pressed too slowly, the relay will register it as a standard manual toggle instead.
The "Memory Full" Orange Flash: If you triple-press the button and the LED flashes Orange instead of turning Red, the NodOn relay's internal memory cache is entirely full. It has reached its limit of 22 saved wireless controllers and cannot accept new ones. You must perform a factory reset on the relay (see Section 4) to clear old tokens.
If the NodOn light is cycling ON/OFF every second, but clicking your Retrotouch switch does nothing:
Insufficient Press Force ("Soft-Clicking"): This is the most common issue with kinetic hardware. Because the switch has no battery, a gentle or slow press will not generate enough voltage to power the internal $868\text{ MHz}$ radio chip. You must press the rocker down with a sharp, sudden, and firm motion until you hear a loud, crisp mechanical clack. This ensures a full micro-burst of electricity is generated to broadcast the pairing signal.
Signal Shielding or Range Issues: While the (868MHz) frequency penetrative capability is excellent, heavy shielding blocks it. If the NodOn relay is shoved deep inside a metal wall junction box, or behind thick foil-backed insulation, the signal will be heavily degraded. Temporarily unmount the Retrotouch switch plate and click it while standing right next to the light fixture to see if it links.
Module Orientation: Ensure the kinetic module inside your Retrotouch frame is sitting upright. If it was snapped into the housing upside down, the pairing signal is still sending, but it will map to the inverted button location.
If the switch works occasionally but requires multiple clicks to turn a light on or off:
Rocker Play/Slack: Ensure the physical glass front plate and the plastic button rockers are snapped absolutely flush against the underlying Retrotouch frame. If a rocker is loose or misaligned, it won't press the internal contact nipples cleanly, leading to failed or weak kinetic energy harvesting.
Radio Interference: Ensure the NodOn receiver or the wall switch isn't placed directly adjacent to large metal objects, Wi-Fi routers, or heavy microwave emitting appliances that could disrupt the $868\text{ MHz}$ band.
If you have inherited a module, mixed up your zones, or filled up the relay's memory allocation, clearing the cache and starting fresh is the cleanest fix.
Locate the physical programming button on the body of the NodOn relay.
Press and hold this button down continuously for more than 5 seconds until the diagnostic LED turns a steady Orange. Release the button.
You now have a 30-second window to confirm. Press the button once briefly.
The LED will rapidly flash Red and Green alternatively, confirming that all paired switches have been completely erased from its memory.
Because the Retrotouch switch is a passive transmitter, it does not actually store network data or keys—it simply broadcasts a permanent, unique hardware ID coded at the factory. Therefore, the switch itself never needs to be factory reset. All resetting is handled entirely on the receiver (NodOn) end.
