Retrotouch Switching Guide

Understanding 1-Way, 2-Way & Intermediate Switching

Choosing the correct switch type is essential for ensuring your lighting operates as intended. Retrotouch offers solutions for standard switching, multi-way switching and smart wireless control to suit a wide range of installations.

1-Way Switching

A 1-way switch controls a lighting circuit from one switch location only. This is the most common switching arrangement found in UK homes.

Typical Applications

  • Bedrooms
  • Bathrooms
  • Utility rooms
  • Small offices
  • Cupboards

How It Works

One switch controls one light or lighting circuit. Pressing the switch turns the light on or off from a single location.

Best For

  • Simple lighting installations
  • Rooms with one entrance
  • Standard on/off control

2-Way Switching

A 2-way switch allows one light to be controlled from two different switch locations.

Typical Applications

  • Top and bottom of staircases
  • Hallways
  • Rooms with two entrances
  • Garages with multiple access doors

How It Works

Two switches communicate with each other so either switch can turn the same light on or off independently.

Best For

  • Improving convenience
  • Eliminating the need to walk back to the original switch
  • Residential and commercial applications

Retrotouch offers standard touch switches, rotary dimmers and Smart Wi-Fi switches that support two-way switching.

Intermediate Switching

An intermediate switching circuit is used when one light needs to be controlled from three or more locations.

In a traditional wiring arrangement:

  • The switches at each end of the circuit are 2-way switches
  • Any switch positioned between them must be an intermediate switch

Typical Applications

  • Three-storey staircases
  • Long corridors
  • Large hallways
  • Commercial buildings
  • Hotels

Benefits

  • Convenient lighting control from multiple locations
  • Ideal for larger properties
  • Flexible operation without returning to a previous switch

Smart Wi-Fi Switching

Retrotouch Smart Wi-Fi switches provide an alternative to traditional multi-way wiring.

Instead of using conventional strapper wiring between switches, compatible Smart Wi-Fi switches can be linked within the SmartLife app to create:

  • Wireless 2-way switching
  • Wireless intermediate switching
  • Smartphone control
  • Voice assistant integration
  • Scheduling and automation

This makes them ideal for renovations or smart home upgrades where additional wiring may be difficult.
