LED Dimmer Compatibility & Flicker Troubleshooting
Guide
This guide is designed to help customers select compatible
LED lamps for RetroTouch dimmers and resolve common dimming issues such as
flickering, flashing, buzzing, poor dimming performance, or lights turning off
at low brightness levels.
Before You Buy
Check 1 – Are Your LED Lamps Dimmable?
✓ Dimmable LED lamps can be used with RetroTouch dimmers.
✗ Non-dimmable LED lamps must
never be used with dimmer switches.
Using non-dimmable LEDs on a dimmer can cause:
Check 2 – Stay Within the Dimmer Load Rating
RetroTouch dimmers have maximum load limits.
Typical ratings include:
|
Lamp
Type
|
Maximum
Load
|
|
LED
Lamps
|
Up to
5W–150W (depending on model) (Max 10 lamps)
|
|
Halogen
Lamps
|
Up to
5W–400W (depending on model) (Max 10 lamps)
|
Exceeding the rated load can result in:
Check 3 – Use Matching LED Lamps
For best performance:
✓ Use the same brand and model of LED lamp on the circuit.
Avoid mixing:
Mixed lamp types often produce inconsistent dimming and
flicker.
Check 4 – Two-Way Dimming Requirements
RetroTouch rotary dimmers can be used in a two-way setup
using the Retrotouch Rocker Switch.
RetroTouch touch dimmers are one-way only and cannot be
wired as traditional two-way dimmers. (

Common LED Dimming Problems
Problem: Lights Flicker at Low Brightness
Most Likely Cause
The minimum brightness level is set too low for the LED
lamp.
Many LED drivers cannot operate reliably at extremely low
dimming levels. (
Retrotouch
Support)
Solution
Adjust the dimmer's minimum brightness setting until the
lowest stable light level is achieved without flicker. RetroTouch specifically
provides a minimum brightness adjustment feature for this purpose. (

Problem: Lights Flash or Flicker Across the Entire
Dimming Range
Possible Causes
☐ Non-dimmable LED lamps
☐ Incompatible LED driver
☐ Faulty lamp
☐ Mixed lamp types
☐ Wiring issue
Recommended Actions
Confirm
all lamps are dimmable.
Replace
mixed lamp types with identical lamps.
Test
with a known compatible LED lamp.
Check
all wiring connections.
Replace
any suspect lamps.
Problem: Lights Turn Off Before Reaching Minimum
Brightness
Cause
Some LED lamps cannot dim as low as others.
The dimmer reaches a point where the lamp driver can no
longer operate reliably. (
Retrotouch
Support)
Solution
Increase the minimum brightness setting until the lamp
remains stable throughout the dimming range. (

Problem: Flickering After Installing New LED Lamps
Cause
Lamp and dimmer compatibility issue.
Even dimmable LEDs vary significantly between manufacturers.
Some LED drivers perform better than others with specific dimmers.
Solution
Test
with another lamp brand.
Replace
all lamps on the circuit with matching models.
Verify
dimmer and lamp compatibility.
Problem: One Lamp Flickers But Others Do Not
Cause
Often indicates a faulty LED lamp.
A failing LED driver can affect only one fitting or
occasionally impact the entire circuit.
Solution
Swap the lamp with another fitting.
If the problem follows the lamp, replace it.
Problem: Buzzing Noise from Dimmer or Lamps
Possible Causes
Solution
Use
quality dimmable LEDs.
Ensure
the total load falls within the dimmer's rating.
Replace
incompatible lamps.
RetroTouch Minimum Brightness Adjustment
If your lamps flicker at lower dimming levels, RetroTouch
recommends adjusting the minimum brightness setting.
Benefits include:
✓ Eliminates low-level flicker
✓ Prevents lamps switching off unexpectedly
✓ Improves dimming smoothness
✓ Optimises compatibility with different LED lamps
The minimum brightness can be adjusted directly through the
dimmer's programming sequence without additional tools. (

When to Contact Technical Support
Please contact support if:
Flickering
remains after adjusting minimum brightness.
Multiple
lamp brands have been tested.
The
dimmer will not enter programming mode.
The
dimmer overheats.
Lights
behave erratically at all brightness levels.
The
issue occurs across multiple circuits.
When contacting support, provide:
This information will help determine whether the issue is
related to lamp compatibility, installation, wiring, or the dimmer itself. (
