Plug Socket Installation Guide

Important Safety Information

  • Installation should only be carried out by a qualified electrician familiar with UK electrical regulations.
  • Always isolate the electrical supply at the consumer unit before starting any work.
  • Confirm that the circuit is de-energised using an approved voltage tester.
  • Never work on live electrical circuits.
  • Ensure the installation complies with the latest edition of BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and all applicable local regulations.

Before You Begin

Check that you have:

  • Decorative plug socket
  • Suitable wall back box
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pozidriv screwdriver
  • Voltage tester
  • Wire stripper
  • Small spirit level (recommended)

Identifying the Terminals

The socket terminals are normally marked:

Terminal

Wire Colour (Current UK)

Function

L

Brown

Live

N

Blue

Neutral

E

Green/Yellow

Earth

Always connect conductors to the matching marked terminals.

Removing the Existing Socket

  1. Switch OFF the electrical supply.
  2. Verify the circuit is dead.
  3. Unscrew the existing socket.
  4. Carefully pull the socket forward.
  5. Inspect all wiring for damage or overheating.

Replace damaged wiring before continuing.

Installing the New Socket

Step 1

Loosen each terminal screw.

Step 2

Insert each conductor fully into its correct terminal.

  • Brown → Live (L)
  • Blue → Neutral (N)
  • Green/Yellow → Earth (E)

Step 3

Tighten each terminal securely.

Check that:

  • No copper is exposed.
  • Insulation reaches the terminal.
  • Wires cannot pull free

Mounting the Socket

  1. Carefully fold the cables into the back box.
  2. Position the socket squarely.
  3. Secure using the supplied fixing screws.
  4. Tighten evenly.
  5. Do not overtighten as this may damage the faceplate.

Restoring Power

  1. Restore the power at the consumer unit.
  2. Check that the socket operates correctly.
  3. Test with a socket tester or approved electrical test equipment.
  4. Verify earth continuity where appropriate.

Final Checks

Confirm:

☐ Socket is securely fixed

☐ Faceplate is level

☐ All screws are tight

☐ No exposed conductors

☐ Power restored successfully

☐ Socket tested correctly

Troubleshooting

Issue

Possible Cause

Socket not working

Circuit breaker off

No power

Loose conductor

Socket loose

Mounting screws require adjustment

Intermittent operation

Poor terminal connection

If the problem persists, isolate the supply and inspect all wiring before reconnecting.

Maintenance

  • Periodically inspect the faceplate for damage.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaning products.
  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Check that the fixing screws remain secure.

Technical Information

  • Rated Voltage: 220–240V AC
  • Frequency: 50/60Hz
  • Rated Current: 13A
  • Indoor use only
  • Install in a suitable BS-compliant back box

Disposal
