Understanding the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Requirement

A common hurdle when installing smart home devices is meeting the specific wireless network criteria. All Retrotouch Wi-Fi Smart Switches are designed to communicate exclusively on a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi frequency band. They are incompatible with the 5GHz frequency band.

Understanding why this requirement exists and how to configure your home network for it ensures a stable, permanently connected smart lighting setup.


1. Why Do Smart Switches Use 2.4GHz Instead of 5GHz?

Modern home routers broadcast internet data across two separate highway lanes: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. While 5GHz is faster and excellent for streaming high-definition video or gaming right next to your router, it has major drawbacks for smart home automation.

  • Superior Wall Penetration: A 2.4GHz frequency utilizes longer radio waves. These waves travel significantly farther and easily pass through solid brick walls, structural timbers, plasterboard, and insulation. Since light switches are permanently recessed inside metal or plastic wall boxes, they need the superior penetrating power of 2.4GHz.

  • Extended Range: A 2.4GHz signal maintains a stable connection at more than double the physical distance of a 5GHz signal. This is critical for switches installed in far corners of the home, hallways, or garages.

  • Low Data Overhead: Smart switches only transmit tiny data packets (e.g., a simple "turn on" or "turn off" command). They do not need the high bandwidth of 5GHz, making 2.4GHz the most energy-efficient and reliable choice.


2. The Problem with "Smart Connect" (Merged Networks)

Most modern internet routers (provided by companies like BT, Virgin Media, Sky, or EE) use a feature called Smart Connect or Band Steering. This merges both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz lanes under one single Wi-Fi name and password.

When you attempt to pair your Retrotouch switch, your modern smartphone automatically attaches itself to the faster 5GHz lane. When the Retrotouch or Smart Life app attempts to hand the network credentials from your phone over to the switch, the process fails because the switch cannot see the 5GHz path your phone is on.


3. How to Satisfy the 2.4GHz Requirement During Setup

To safely pair your switches, you must force your smartphone onto the 2.4GHz lane temporarily during the setup process. Once the switch is paired, it locks onto the 2.4GHz signal, and you can return your phone to its normal settings.


Method A: Temporarily Disabling 5GHz in Router Settings

  1. Look at the sticker on the back of your home router to find its Admin IP Address (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and the admin password.

  2. Open a web browser on your phone or computer, type that IP address into the URL bar, and log in.

  3. Locate the Wireless / Wi-Fi Settings menu.

  4. Find the 5GHz Wireless Band toggle and switch it to OFF or Disabled.

  5. Save your settings. Your home network is now purely broadcasting 2.4GHz.

  6. Open your app and pair all your Retrotouch switches.

  7. Return to your router settings and turn the 5GHz band back ON. Your phone will jump back to high-speed data, and your switches will remain perfectly connected on the 2.4GHz band.

Method B: Creating a Dedicated 2.4GHz Guest Network

If your router allows it, log into the admin panel and enable a Guest Network. Restrict this guest network strictly to the 2.4GHz band only, and name it something like Home_Smart. Connect your smartphone to this network, and pair all your smart switches to it. This leaves your primary network free for computers and phones, while keeping your smart home devices on their own stable, isolated lane.
